Diana Talks Scottish Independence

September 18, 2014 By Krystal Van Eyk Leave a Comment

1280px-Flag_of_Scotland.svg

In a new article for The Telegraph, Diana Gabaldon shares with us a few outsider thoughts on the eve of Scotland’s big referendum.  In the piece, she writes about how she believes the Jacobite uprising can inform us about Scottish independence, and relates the historic event to our own American war of independence.  You can read the full article over at The Telegraph.

For months, people have been asking my views about the Scottish independence referendum, and I’ve been saying, “It’s not my country; I don’t live here. Much as I love Scotland, I think it would be inappropriate to express a personal opinion regarding Scottish politics.”

But at this point, so close to the vote, I don’t think I can do harm or good to either side. And I’ve been asked once again for my opinion because of what I’m told are my “unique perspectives.”

Exclusive Interview With Diana & Ron @ Outlander Premiere

September 16, 2014 By Krystal Van Eyk Leave a Comment

D&Rcarpet

We were lucky enough to get the chance to interview some of the cast and crew of Outlander at the red carpet premiere earlier this summer in San Diego.  Now that the crush of interviews has past, we thought we’d share our interview with Diana Gabaldon and Ron Moore, who discuss the episode eight cliffhanger, as well as which scene came closest to Diana’s imagination.

Diana’s “Outlander” Cameo Revealed

August 27, 2014 By Krystal Van Eyk Leave a Comment

DianaCameo

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now have our first look at Diana Gabaldon’s cameo in Outlander!  Diana’s self-described “scenelet” will air in this week’s episode, “The Gathering,” as Herself appears as Iona McTavish.

“Matt Roberts, the scriptwriter for this particular episode (and a lovely man he is, too, Guy Fawkes beard notwithstanding), would write a tiny scenelet for me,” Gabaldon explained. “Just a couple of lines of dialogue. They could then film that pretty quickly on its own, and I’d then be released… The lady in question is at the Gathering, and the scenelet in question takes place in one of the galleries over the Great Hall.”

You can also read more from Diana’s experience on set over on her website.

Buzzfeed Calls “Outlander” the Feminist “Game of Thrones”

August 5, 2014 By Krystal Van Eyk Leave a Comment

ClaireBook

In a fantastic new article, Buzzfeed’s Anne Helen Petersen presents Outlander as the feminist version of Game of Thrones, and calls out all of the reasons that men should be watching the show, too.

When asked whether Outlander is a feminist text, Gabaldon smartly explained that it depends on one’s definition of feminism: “[Outlander] is about a woman, who is quite confident in who she is as a woman, and that’s one definition of feminist — you take yourself at your own worth, and you demand that others take you at your own estimation.” And the guiding love story of the text is, in many ways, the story of a man becoming a feminist as well: Surrounded by patriarchy, Jamie (Sam Heughan) is nevertheless forced to “take [Claire] at her own estimation”; when they fall in love, it’s because both realize themselves as the other’s equal.

You can read the full article over on Buzzfeed.com.

Outlander Red Carpet Premiere Photos!

July 29, 2014 By Krystal Van Eyk Leave a Comment

OutlanderPremiere42

Now that I’ve come out of my Comic-Con haze, I’ve created a new gallery of all of my photos from Friday’s event.  In the gallery below you’ll find all of my pics from the red carpet (or should we say tartan carpet) premiere, followed by the cast Q&A session with Sam, Cait, Lotte, Graham, Tobias, Diana, and Ron.  The cast rolled up to the tartan carpet in classic 1940s cars, and followed bagpipers and lads in kilts onto the press line.  After we had our chance to chat with the cast and crew, we all went inside the theatre and were treated to a performance by composer Bear McCreary, who played some classic Scottish tunes and debuted the theme he wrote for Claire and Jamie.  Seeing the first episode on the big screen was truly a remarkable experience, and I I think it’s safe to say that I wasn’t the only one in the audience with goosebumps and a lump in their throat.  The first episode was everything I could hope for (the second, which I screened before the premiere, is just as good, but that’s all I’ll say for now).  I don’t think you will be disappointed with the show.  Starz and the cast and crew have done an amazing job, and it’s everything I could hope for and more.  Hope you enjoy the pics from this very epic night!

“Outlander” Comic-Con Panel & Autograph Schedule Announced

July 8, 2014 By Krystal Van Eyk Leave a Comment

OutlanderSDCC

It’s been a busy day for Outlander news, with the official announcement that Diana Gabaldon and the cast of the TV series will be appearing at a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25th.  The panel will take place at 2:15 in room 6A and will feature the following cast/crew members:

Ronald D. Moore

Diana Gabaldon

Caitriona Balfe

Sam Heughan

Tobias Menzies

Graham McTavish

Lotte Verbeek

There will also be an autograph session on the same day at the Starz booth inside of the exhibit hall.

For more information on the autograph session, be sure to visit booth 4029 to see how you can participate.  From past SDCC experience, it’s usually a choice of which one you want to see more, the panel or the autograph session.  For shows and movies with big fandoms, people usually are camped out overnight in order to attend a highly anticipated panel, and autograph session tickets are usually part of a drawing that takes place while you may be in line for that panel.  This may not be the case with Outlander, but it very well could be, so you may have to choose which one you’d rather do.  This has been my experience in other years, but it very well could be different, so if you are attending, we sure to get more info at the Starz booth.
